Everything you need to know about rhinoplasty

A 'prominent' nose can really complicate your life. The profile of the nose is in fact an essential facial feature, it is the element that occupies a large part of the face and tends to imprint a characteristic expression on the face, for better or worse. So it is clear how a nose that is too big, crooked, and in any case not harmonious can create discomfort.

Its reshaping harmonises all elements of the face and improves all features. This is why rhinoplasty is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures. It is a procedure that men and women, the very young and the very mature, those with only an aesthetic defect and those with functional, congenital or trauma-related problems all undergo indiscriminately.

How does rhinoplasty work? Changes to the size and appearance of the nose are achieved by adapting, modifying or removing the osteo-cartilaginous structures of the nasal pyramid. Of course, this is always done by considering the specific characteristics of each person. There is therefore no such thing as an ideal nose, but rather an 'ideal for that person' nose.

In addition to a purely aesthetic defect, the nose can also have functional defects. Placed in a prominent position, right in the middle of the face, it is particularly exposed to possible trauma. For example, deviations of the nasal septum due to falls, blows, blows and trauma of various kinds that alter its functionality are quite frequent. Just as there may be cases of congenital functionality problems. Here, therefore, surgery also means recovering good breathing.

The operation is performed undergeneral anaesthesia and overnight hospitalisation. Depending on the type of nose to be operated on and the result to be obtained, the techniques to be adopted are different. in general, we can say that the most common technique is extramucosal rhinoplasty, which is also the least damaging to the nasal structures. This type of intervention allows us to act both on the cartilage structures that give shape to the lower part of the nose and the tip, and on the bony structures that determine the shape of the upper part and the back.

The procedure can be performed in both young and older patients. It is very often requested by young girls and boys who are embarrassed by a nose that is too 'bulky', or by sportsmen who find breathing problems.

The operation can be performed from the age of 16. The results are visible in the short term and the discomfort associated with the operation (bruising and swelling) disappears within a few days.
