Reshaping the breast after breastfeeding

Breast milk is definitely the best food for newborns. It provides all the substances that babies need in the first phase of their lives, and also contains fundamental elements that are not found in formula milk. This is why the World Health Organisation recommendsexclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of an infant's life, with the recommendation to continue for up to two years, depending on the needs and wishes of mother and child

There is strong evidence of the benefits of breastfeeding on the baby. For example, it has a good effect on the prevention of illnesses such as diarrhoea and pneumonia, reduces the risk of infections as it provides useful immune defences against the aggression of viruses and bacteria, reduces the risk of developing allergies, and promotes better psychomotor and visual development.

Yet some women, aware of the fact that, once breastfeeding is over, their breasts will probably never return to the way they were, live the experience with concern. In fact, at the end of breastfeeding, the breast almost always looks different than before. This is often unavoidable even with all due care.

During pregnancy, thanks to hormones, the breasts become round and firm, to everyone's delight. Once breast-feeding is over, however, the breasts 'empty out'. this is completely normal, the glands have receded, the lipid reserves accumulated during pregnancy have been depleted, the skin remains excess, and the breasts appear sagging, empty.

To comfort all new mothers first of all, we must not forget the positive aspects that breastfeeding also has on them. Itreduces blood loss and the risk of bleeding, as well as the risk of breast and ovarian cancer. And anyway, there are many things you can do to improve the appearance of your breasts: firming creams, massages, physical exercises.

On the other hand, cosmetic surgery can be used to return the breast to its pre-pregnancy appearance and even improve it. One can act in different ways.

With breast augmentation it is possible to both increase the volume of the breast and reshape it. For those who want to take the opportunity to also increase their size.

With lipofilling, fat tissue is taken from other areas of the body (such as the abdomen, hips, thighs). This, after being purified of blood, is then injected into the breast to restore its volume. This technique allows modest increases in volume and is therefore indicated for those who do not want to increase in size but simply fill and plump.

Mastopexy is a technique that allows for breast remodelling with consequent lifting of the areola-nipple complex and increase in volume. This operation also does not change the size but is indicated for women who have undergone a progressive dropping and emptying of the breast, just as occurs after breast-feeding.

In any case, it is necessary to be patient and wait a few months (6 to 9) after the end of breast-feeding before any intervention to allow the tissues to recover physiologically.
